About This School:
Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, most often referred to as Louisiana State University, or LSU, is a public coeducational university located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The University was founded in 1853 in what is now known as Pineville, Louisiana, under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. The current LSU main campus was dedicated in 1926, and consists of more than 250 buildings constructed in the style of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, and occupies a 650-acre (2.6 km²) plateau on the banks of the Mississippi River. LSU is the flagship institution of the Louisiana State University System, and the largest institution of higher education in Louisiana in terms of student enrollment. In 2011, the University enrolled nearly 24,000 undergraduate and over 5,000 graduate students in 14 schools and colleges. Several of LSU's graduate schools, such as the E.J. Ourso College of Business and the Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

7 WAYS TO HELP DEVELOP GROWTH AS MENTORS:

TIP 1: EMBRACE IMPERFECTION
Encourage students to view their mistakes as important steps in their learning journey. Reinforce the idea that no one has ever learned something valuable without making mistakes along the way.

TIP 2: REFRAME CHALLENGES AS OPPORTUNITIES
Cultivating a growth mindset is about teaching students how to learn and use strategies to overcome challenges. Explain the benefits of overcoming obstacles for people who push through comfort zones to meet challenges head on.

TIP 3: PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-EVALUATION

Language – written and spoken – is an excellent tool for helping students see the difference between fixed and growth mindsets. Put this to the test by having students practice phrases that promote a growth mindset “Mistakes help you learn.” Avoid language like “You’re so smart” or “Wrong answer.”

TIP 5: TRY DIFFERENT TEACHING TECHNIQUES
Use a variety of instructional strategies tailored to meet the learning needs of all students. For content use video and audio clips, presentations, and other mediums. Have students work individually, in pairs and in small and large groups. Challenge students to demonstrate their understanding of content via tests, projects, and assignments.

TIP 6: MODEL A GROWTH MINDSET FOR STUDENTS
As critical role models for students, it’s important for mentors to let students see their growth mindset in action. Be honest about something that is difficult for you. Tell students when you’re discouraged and discuss solutions with them. Involving students in this way helps them see the need to work though challenges to make progress.

TIP 7: COLLABORATE ON WORK EXPERIENCE BUILDER AND ENGAGE WITH STUDENTS

(ADS) (pronounced as separate letters) Short for alternate data stream, a function of Microsofts NTFS file system in which files can be embedded in other files and are invisible to the user through Windows Explorer (i.e., the ADS does not affect the size, function or display of the main file the ADS is attached to). While ADS files (which are well known throughout the hacker community) can be used maliciously by an attacker wishing to plant an executable file into another file without it being detected, ADS also is used legitimately by programmers.
