Client Server Computing

The basic difference between the client and server is that client relies on the services of the server, whereas the server authorizes the client's requests and facilitates them with the requested services. Servers can store and analyze the large data sets, whereas clients are not suited for such tasks.

Characteristics of Client Server Computing The salient points for client server computing are as follows:

The client server computing works with a system of request and response. The client sends a request to the server and the server responds with the desired information.

The client and server should follow a common communication protocol so they can easily interact with each other. All the communication protocols are available at the application layer.

A server can only accommodate a limited number of client requests at a time. So it uses a system based to priority to respond to the requests.

Denial of Service attacks hindera servers ability to respond to authentic client requests by inundating it with false requests.

An example of a client server computing system is a web server. It returns the web pages to the clients that requested them.

Term Of The Day: UNIX
Pronounced yoo-niks, a popular multi-user, multitasking operating system developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. Created by just a handful of programmers, UNIX was designed to be a small, flexible system used exclusively by programmers. UNIX was one of the first operating systems to be written in a high-level programming language, namely C. This meant that it could be installed on virtually any computer for which a C compiler existed. This natural portability combined with its low price made it a popular choice among universities. (It was inexpensive because antitrust regulations prohibited Bell Labs from marketing it as a full-scale product.)
