I remember the morning I left Atlanta.
The car was packed.

My coffee was in the cup holder.

My phone was charged.

The tank was full.

And on the GPS, I had entered one destination:

I knew where I wanted to go.

What I didn't know was everything that would happen along the way.

I didn't know which exits I would take.

And I certainly didn't know that by the time I reached Detroit, I would be a different person than the one who left Atlanta.

MILE 0 — WHERE I AM
As I pulled away from Atlanta, I realized something.
Before I could get somewhere new, I had to understand where I was starting.

What did I know?

Those questions became my starting point.

I didn't need to have every answer.

I just needed enough clarity to take the first mile.

LEARN — I FOUND MY DIRECTION
The first highway sign appeared.
NORTH.

I followed it.

The signs didn't tell me everything about the journey.

They simply helped me make the next decision.

That's how I began to think about learning.

I didn't need learning just to collect information.

I needed learning to help me navigate.

Every new skill became another road sign.

Every new piece of knowledge gave me another way to understand the road ahead.

Every credential became another marker of progress.

And slowly, the destination became less intimidating.

I didn't know every turn.

But I knew enough to keep moving.

I was learning my way forward.

MILE 100 — I PUT LEARNING TO WORK
Eventually, I realized something.
A map doesn't move the car.

I do.

Knowing where I wanted to go wasn't enough.

I had to drive.

That's when learning became Build.

I started putting knowledge into practice.

I worked on projects.

I solved problems.

I collaborated.

I experimented.

I made mistakes.

I tried again.

I discovered that experience teaches things a classroom can't.

The more I practiced, the more capable I became.

I stopped saying:

“I learned this.”

And started saying:

“I can do this.”

That difference changed everything.

MILE MARKERS — I COULD SEE MY PROGRESS
I passed a mile marker.
Then another.

Then another.

At first, I barely noticed.

Then I realized something:

I was getting somewhere.

My career worked the same way.

One project.

One skill.

One credential.

One experience.

One challenge.

One accomplishment.

One new responsibility.

Each became a mile marker.

Sometimes growth is difficult to recognize because I'm too busy driving to look back.

But when I pause long enough to see the markers, I realize:

I've come farther than I thought.

⛽ I HAD TO STOP FOR GAS
Eventually, the fuel gauge dropped.
I pulled into a gas station.

I filled the tank.

I grabbed a coffee.

I stretched my legs.

Then I got back on the road.

I started thinking about how often people expect themselves to keep going without refueling.

I can't.

Nobody can.

Sometimes I need new knowledge.

Sometimes I need feedback.

Sometimes I need inspiration.

Sometimes I need a new challenge.

Sometimes I just need a reason to be excited about the road again.

Stopping didn't mean I was falling behind.

It meant I was preparing to go farther.

🌄 I STARTED NOTICING THE SCENERY
The scenery changed.
Atlanta was far behind me.

The buildings gave way to trees.

The terrain changed.

The communities changed.

The road felt different.

And for the first time, I stopped thinking only about Detroit.

I looked around.

I enjoyed the view.

I realized how easy it is to spend an entire career staring at the destination.

Promotion.

Next job.

Next title.

Next certification.

Next goal.

But what about everything happening between those goals?

👥 I STOPPED TO SEE AN OLD FRIEND
One afternoon, I saw an exit sign for a town I hadn't visited in years.

So I took the exit.

Old mistakes.

Old dreams.

My friend asked me where I was headed.

I explained.

Then my friend told me about something I hadn't considered.

A person I should meet.

An opportunity I should explore.

A skill I should develop.

I drove away thinking about how many roads I could never discover by myself.

Sometimes another person can see a possibility I can't see.

It introduces me to voices I wouldn't hear otherwise.

Possibilities I hadn't imagined.

The journey becomes richer when I listen beyond my own lane.

🛞 THEN I GOT A FLAT TIRE
And then—
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

I pulled over.

Flat tire.

For a few minutes, I was frustrated.

I had a destination.

I had a schedule.

I didn't have time for this.

But the road didn't care.

The tire needed to be fixed.

So I stopped.

I got help.

I repaired it.

And I continued.

I've had flat tires in my career, too.

A job I didn't get.

A promotion I missed.

A project that failed.

A skill I didn't have.

A plan that didn't work.

A door that closed.

At first, every setback felt like the end of the road.

Eventually, I learned something:

**A setback is a stop.

It isn't necessarily the end.**

I can learn from it.

I can build from it.

I can grow through it.

Then I can get moving again.

🏨 I CHECKED INTO A HOTEL
That night, I was exhausted.
The GPS said Detroit was still ahead.

But I couldn't keep driving.

So I stopped.

I checked into a hotel.

I ate dinner.

I put my phone on the charger.

And I slept.

The next morning, the destination hadn't moved.

But I had.

I was rested.

Clearer.

Ready.

I realized that rest isn't the opposite of progress.

Sometimes rest is what makes progress possible.

There are seasons in my career when I need to push.

And seasons when I need to pause.

Both are part of the journey.

🌅 THE NEXT MORNING
I woke up before sunrise.
I walked outside.

The air felt different.

I got back into the car.

Started the engine.

And continued north.

The GPS recalculated.

Detroit: 125 miles.

I smiled.

When I left Atlanta, Detroit had seemed impossibly far away.

Now I could see the destination getting closer.

But something else had changed.

I had changed.

I thought about everything I had accumulated.
What I had learned.

What I had built.

Who I had met.

What I had accomplished.

What I had failed at.

What I had overcome.

I had experience.

I had confidence.

I had relationships.

I had knowledge.

I had evidence of what I could do.

I had learned how to handle uncertainty.

I had learned how to recover from setbacks.

I had learned when to accelerate.

I had learned when to stop.

I had learned how to ask for help.

I had learned how much I could accomplish one mile at a time.

That's Grow.

Growth isn't simply getting closer to a destination.

Growth is becoming capable of reaching destinations that once seemed impossible.

🏁 DETROIT
I finally arrived.
I parked the car.

Turned off the engine.

And sat there for a moment.

Atlanta felt like a long time ago.

But I could still remember the first mile.

The uncertainty.

The excitement.

The questions.

I realized that Detroit wasn't what had changed me.

The road had changed me.

The signs.

The mile markers.

The gas stations.

The meals.

The scenery.

The music.

The old friend.

The flat tire.

The hotel.

The people.

The experiences.

The lessons.

Every stop had added something.

Every mile had changed me.

AND THEN I ENTERED ANOTHER DESTINATION
The next morning, I got back in the car.

And I knew that was okay.

I don't need to know every mile to begin the journey.
