In the age when longships crossed icy seas, two master craftsmen served the same village.

One was a blacksmith who forged every tool before it ever left his anvil. He hammered each blade until it was ready for the hardest journeys. When a farmer or warrior came to him, the tool was complete before it touched their hands.

The other was a wise storyteller who sat beside the hearth. Travelers brought him instructions one line at a time, and as he heard each line, he showed them exactly what to do next. If the instructions wandered astray, he stopped at once and asked for them to be corrected before continuing.

The young apprentices argued over which master possessed the greater wisdom.

"The blacksmith is unmatched," said one. "His work is prepared before the journey begins."

"The storyteller is wiser," replied another. "He teaches while the journey unfolds."

Their debate reached an old shipwright who had built vessels for many seasons.

He handed each apprentice a map.

To the second he said, "Travel with the storyteller the first he said, "Ask the blacksmith to prepare everything before you sail."

To the second he said, "Travel with the storyteller and follow each instruction as it is spoken."

Both apprentices reached the same harbor.

The first arrived swiftly, for every tool had been forged before departure.

The second understood every turn of the voyage, for each step had been explained as it happened.

That evening the shipwright smiled.

"The sea did not ask how you learned to cross it. It asked only whether you reached the shore."

From then on, the apprentices stopped asking which master was greater. Instead, they learned when to seek the forge and when to gather around the hearth.

Moral: A compiler is like the blacksmith, preparing a program before its journey begins. An interpreter is like the storyteller, carrying out instructions as they are given. Both can lead to the same destination, but each serves different needs and offers different strengths.
