In the ancient Stone Age, beside a wide river surrounded by forests and mountains, lived the Tribe of the Steady Hand.

For many seasons, the tribe hunted the Great Horn Beast. Their ancestors had hunted the creature the same way for generations: they followed the same trail, carried the same spears, and waited at the same hunting grounds.

“The old ways have fed us,” said the elders. “The old ways will always feed us.”

Among the tribe lived a young hunter named Aru, who spent more time observing than hunting. He noticed that the river was changing course, the herds were moving differently, and the Great Horn Beasts were no longer traveling along their ancient path.

Aru approached the elders.

“The trail has changed,” he said. “Perhaps we must change our hunt.”

The elders frowned.

“Are you saying our ancestors were wrong?”

“No,” replied Aru. “I am saying they were wise enough to adapt to their world. We must do the same in ours.”

But the tribe refused to listen. They followed the old trail for many days and returned with empty hands.

The children grew hungry. The fires burned lower. The tribe faced a difficult choice: continue following a path that no longer worked or create a new one.

Aru took a different approach.

He did not abandon hunting. He changed how the tribe hunted.

He watched the birds to find new signs of movement. He studied the riverbanks. He shaped smaller spears that could travel farther. He taught the hunters to move quietly through unfamiliar lands.

At first, the new method seemed strange.

“The spear is smaller,” the hunters complained.

“The path is different,” others said.

But then, one morning, the tribe discovered a new herd beyond the old valley. They returned with enough food to feed everyone.

The elders gathered around Aru.

“You changed the spear, the path, and the strategy,” they said. “How did you know when to change?”

Aru held up his spear.

“The spear was never the purpose,” he replied. “The purpose was to provide for the tribe. When the world changed, the spear had to change with it.”

The elders understood.

A pivot was not abandoning the journey.

A pivot was changing direction to continue moving toward the goal.

From that winter onward, the Tribe of the Steady Hand honored a new tradition. Before every hunt, they asked two questions:

“What must remain true?”

and

“What must change?”

And the tribe passed down this wisdom through generations:

The strongest are not those who never change their path. The strongest are those who recognize when a new path will lead them forward.
