Parable Of The Two Windows of the Inventor’s Hall

In a time long ago, there was a great city of inventors where people built tools to help others understand the world.

Among them was an inventor named Liora, who wanted to help people see beyond the limits of their ordinary sight.

"I will build a window that opens into other worlds," she declared.

The first device she created was a pair of enchanted lenses. When people wore them, the familiar city disappeared, and they found themselves standing in places that did not exist in the physical world.

They walked through ancient forests.

They explored distant planets.

They practiced repairing great machines without risking harm.

The people called these lenses the Dream Window.

"It is like traveling without leaving home," they said.

But Liora noticed something.

While the Dream Window was powerful, sometimes people needed the real world around them.

A surgeon needed to see the patient, not only a simulation.

An engineer needed to see a machine and its hidden instructions at the same time.

A student needed to look at a real object while discovering new information about it.

So Liora built a second device.

This one did not replace the world.

It added to it.

Through these lenses, a mechanic could look at an engine and see labels floating above each part. A student could hold a stone and see its history appear beside it. A builder could look at a wall and see the pipes hidden behind it.

The people called these lenses the Living Window.

One day, the citizens argued.

"Which window is better?" asked one group.

"The Dream Window," said some. "It creates entire worlds."

"The Living Window," said others. "It improves the world we already have."

Liora listened and then brought them to a mountain overlooking the city.

"Is a telescope better than a map?" she asked.

"No," they replied.

"Is a map better than a telescope?"

"No."

"Then why must these windows compete?"

She explained:

"The Dream Window lets us enter new realities. The Living Window lets us enrich the reality we already share."

Years passed.

The Dream Window helped people train for dangerous jobs, explore impossible places, and experience stories in new ways.

The Living Window helped people repair, learn, design, and create with greater understanding.

Eventually, the citizens stopped asking which window was greater.

They began asking a better question:

"What world are we trying to help people experience?"

Moral: Virtual reality and augmented reality are not competing visions of the future. One creates immersive worlds apart from our surroundings; the other enhances the world around us. Their true value comes from using the right experience for the right human purpose.
