In a valley where the nights were unusually dark, there was a single lantern that stood at the crossroads. Every evening, an old keeper climbed the hill, cleaned the glass, trimmed the wick, and lit the flame.

Travelers often thanked the lantern, saying, "This light saved us."

The lantern grew proud and thought, I am the reason everyone finds their way.

One winter, the lantern spoke to the keeper.

"You should rest," it said. "Everyone praises my light. I no longer need you."

The keeper smiled sadly and stayed home.

That night, soot covered the glass. The wick burned too low. Before midnight, the flame faded into smoke.

The next evening, the keeper returned. Without scolding the lantern, he cleaned the glass, replaced the wick, and lit the flame again.
