Black History Month Celebrations Planned for A-State Campus

JONESBORO – A series of events are planned in February for Black History Month on the campus of Arkansas State University. The theme this year is "African Americans and the Arts: It's Ours to Tell."

A Black History Month Kick-off will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in center court of Reng Student Union.

Later that day, students can participate in a night of the arts at 6 p.m. in Centennial Hall of Reng Student Union. This event will showcase the community through song, dance, drama and fashion.

Pairing art with therapy, Art is Therapy will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center.

The Student Activities Board will host a Black History Month celebration on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 6 until 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall of Reng Student Union.

A panel discussion about the Black Business District of Jonesboro, which existed from the late 1800s until the 1960s, will be held at Arkansas State University Museum from 5 until 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9.

A soul food dinner will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry building. The community is invited to participate in this event.

Black Student Association Week will be held from Sunday, Feb. 11, through Friday, Feb. 16.

A voter registration event is planned for Thursday, Feb. 15, from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Mockingbird Room of the Reng Student Union. This event is being hosted by Jonesboro Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta and Craighead County NAACP.

The Evolve Fashion Show is planned for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, in Centennial Hall of Reng Student Union. This event will showcase different styles of art through fashion.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) is partnering with the Multicultural Center to host a Sneaker Ball, which will be held at Cooper Alumni Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. [UPDATE: This event has been cancelled.]

Tickets will be available for purchase at center court of Reng Student Union until Wednesday, Feb. 14. Those interested in attending the event can also reach out to the A-State NPHC via Instagram to purchase tickets. Attendees are encouraged to wear sneakers with their formal wear.

A ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, for the Living Legends Awards. This event will be held in the auditorium and in the Mockingbird Room of the Reng Student Union.

On Thursday, Feb. 29, the event “Black Men in Medicine,” will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Mockingbird Room of Reng Student Union.
