Whether or not you performing college student freelance services, it is definitely important to get started on your professional portfolio early. As a college student most of your project will be research based and may not be an acceptable gauge on your abilities for an employer. Having a couple of projects under your belt that allow you to gain experience, lessons learned, as well as network yourself can never hurt. Since you are a student first, start on smaller scale projects first and continue to build on your skillset. You never know where those experiences will take you.

Have you ever heard the phrase that "It's not what you know, its who you know". Well unless you are kin to Mr. Dell, Mr. Gates, etc. it takes time to build a quality network of contacts. When it's time for graduation or an internship these contacts that you have previously worked projects for can be a great reference source. As get tight in a tighter economy, the more broad your network is the more options you'll have.

Just as you have developed various tools to help with learning and studying, you can also parallel those tools over to your respective degree. Learning what works and what doesn't is experience gained. As a student freelancer that sooner you get into the mix and start gaining lessons learned the better able you'll be with respect to completing your projects to your clients specifications as well as completing them within the respective deadling. For example a web developer will have his/her tricks of the trade. You don't want to try implement those trick of the trade on the fly. As a freelancer you'll be honing your skills and learning alot about the craft you're attempting to master.

4. Use the skills you are learning about in college!

You're learning about alot in college, wouldn't it be great to be able to fill in the learning gaps while you are learning rather than when college is over. You'll definitely be ahead of the power curve if you've had the opportunity to gain real world exposure to coincide with the learning gain during college.
